art is life.

my wonderful, wonderful parents came to visit us this weekend and brought a BEAUTIFUL book of giorgio morandi's work that a neighbor sent to me.
i can't stop looking at all of his natura morta (still life paintings) the colors are perfect...so clean and simple. so full of light. and i'm as obsessed as he was with this odd shaped vase. isn't the texture perfect?

if you haven't ever heard of him, look him up! he's often described as italy's greatest still life painter...i can see why! doesn't it remind you a bit of a simpler, softer, neutral cezanne?
the new book was only a teeeeeny bit of my parents' visit, so stay tuned for a better recap soon!

the blanket of snow...

the delta got 6 inches of snow last night...which made the landscape so beautiful this morning. it looked like everything was covered in this smooth white blanket. in fact, neko (the cat who rooms with us sometimes) stepped out of the door and pounced on the snow just like she does on the bed when our toes move under our white down comforter.

this isn't my photo, but i took a few when boone and i went for a walk around the town. as we walked, i remembered a retreat we went on together (getting trained for a summer job) just after we'd declared our mutual affection but just before we'd actually been on a date.

that day, we walked around in the snow and through a labyrinth on this amazing methodist retreat campus outside of atlanta and learned about each other. i was DYING to snuggle up to him and hold his hand, but we hadn't even been on a DATE yet so i tried to play it cool. it was really comforting to get to walk with him last night as the flakes fell and nestle under his arm as much as i wanted. ;) the joys of having a life-long partner, i guess!

did it snow where you were this weekend?

ice, ice, baby...

it was soooo cold outside this morning...for some of you, 18 degrees is nothing, but for us, it is COLD. frost on the grass, see your breath in front of you, hands freezing on the steering wheel cold. the best part of cold weather for me is how beautiful and clean everything looks...
so, here are some lovely photos that remind of this this morning.

wishing for white...

i'm ready for spring... wish it was warm enough for me to wear this little number around town and i wish that it was after easter so white was acceptable. and MOST OF ALL i wish 13bees hadn't already sold it b/c it's just a dream! wouldn't it be so pretty for a bride to wear at a brunch or something?

wall papers...

a little more inspiration from everyday objects...

it turns out that sandra juto puts fun little things and pretty papers on her walls instead of hiding them away in drawers. love it.

a head of the curve... (or, the weak pun)

i really like bedrooms to have as few distractions as possible... in our white and silver boudoir we've got a bed, a dresser, bedside tables, and my LOVELY, PERFECT mid 20th century vanity. the thing is, we don't have a headboard which makes the room kind of feels naked... (see below for approximation of bedroom)

i've been looking around for some easy ideas so we could have a headboard if we wanted one, and here's what I've come up with so far...

i think the burlap is my fav, but then the middle two classic ones are pretty, too...not sure about the bird, but it's definitely cool. hmpf.

i don't really like roses...

i know. this is strange... and by "i don't like them" what i mean is that i have a strong preference for other kinds of flowers, but will GLADLY take any flowers that are given to me and will love and cherish them as a gift. but, given the choice, i'll pretty much always pick something else.
which is why i was pretty thrilled when my mom and i met with the really great small town local florist, randy, and he noticed that not once did i mention roses when we talked about anything. i was more than thrilled.. i was impressed.

anyway, we're going with something really loose and organic and classic looking. and we're sticking with things in season (and that hopefully we can get most of it locally) all white hydrangeas, large and small gardenias, baby's breath, sweet pea, and maybe white peonies.
something like this, maybe?

or this?

and the boutonnieres will be just one single gardenia. they just smell like magic to me and will be blooming all over my hometown in may...mmmmm.

ps-- i have no idea where i found these photos. eek! sorry.. i saved them ages ago. let me know if these are yours.

wit...er... white.

i love irony, and stephen colbert, and outdoor performance clothes.
not to mention 80s night, microbreweries, standing still at concerts, difficult breakups, recycling, public radio, wes anderson movies, and going outside.
now, the folks from stuff white people like have done it again... of COURSE I have moleskin notebooks! SHOOT!

after reading this one i wondered, "just how white AM i?"
let me state for the record that I'm 83 out of 122 posts white. i invite you to gage your own white-ness by counting here how many things YOU like. post them in a comment so i know at what end of the spectrum i fall. ( because right now i feel casper-the-friendly-ghost-nearly-transparent-white...)

moleskine_pocket_plain_notebookSince all white people consider themselves to be “creative,” they are constantly in need of products and accessories that will allow them to capture their thoughts. One of the more popular products in recent years has been the Moleskine notebook.
This particular type of notebook is very expensive and was quite popular with writers and artists in the olden days. Needless to say, these are two properties that are highly coveted in the white community. In fact, it’s a good rule of thumb to know that white people like anything that old writers and artists liked: typewriters, journals, suicide, heroin, and trains are just a few examples.
Much like virtually everything else that white people like, these notebooks are considerably more expensive yet provide no additional functionality over regular notebooks that cost a dollar. Thankfully, since white people only keep their most original and creative ideas in the Moleskine, many of them will only be required to purchase one per lifetime.
But the the growing popularity of these little journals, is not without its own set of problems. One of the strangest side effects has been the puzzling situation whereby a white person will sit in an independent coffee shop with a Moleskine notebook resting on top of a Apple laptop. You might wonder why they need so many devices to write down thoughts? Well, if a white person has a great idea, they write it by hand, if they have a good idea, it goes into the computer.
Not only does this help them keep their thoughts organized, but it serves as a signal to the other white people in the shop that the owner of both instruments is truly creative. It screams: “I’m not using my computer to check email and read celebrity gossip, I’m using it to create art. Please ask me about it.”
So when you see a white person with one of these notebooks, you should always ask them about what sort of projects they are working on their free time. But you should never ask to actually see the notebook lest you ask the question “how are you going to make a novel out of five phone numbers and a grocery list?”

clothes don't make the (wo)man...

did i forget to tell about the dress i wore to the museum gala, y'all? usually i go with one of the trusty black or dark-colored numbers that are sort of knee length and have plenty-o-coverage so that i don't feel, you know... exposed when i get all dolled up.

but with all the weddings boone & i went to last summer (5 in 3 months...maybe 6?) i was bored with every single thing in my cocktail/formal wardrobe. that's a problem when your mom and dad are hosting THE event of the year in the tiny town where i grew up. i finally resigned myself to wearing something i'd had for 8 years when i ran across this little number deeeeeeply discounted right after thanksgiving.

it's not black... it's not brown or dark in any way shape or form. it's well, oyster? cream? winter white? totally not a color i would normally choose since my skin is nearly the color of bone china but it looked so good, y'all.
i never feel fab in skimpy outfits but something about the bubble skirt, the curvy full top, and the smokin' color made me feel like i was it. now, don't get me wrong..i DID NOT look like this teeny lady... but i looked like me in a pretty, pretty dress.

i've worn a lot of cocktail dresses and i'd never felt like that before! it made me want to feel like this everyday... which means I need to throw out all of my clothes OR just get some SERIOUS exercise in the coming months.

and y'all...i hope that you at least have one dress/suit/outfit that makes you feel as great as i did for your holiday soirees. or your wedding. or your life. or whatever. :)

*also, this might make a really great outfit for a really fun, nontraditional bride. for realz.

next holiday, please...

i'd love this sweet little guy from anthropologie on my christmas tree... or maybe i'd just want a tree full of him!

here are a few other notables from their holiday collection... for a very wintry and natural tree.

grown up, responsible papier mache...

so i usually avoid knickknacks and clutter at all costs, or buying random things that you can't actually USE for anything... but when i ran across stray dog designs shop, i was enamored with these little papier mache versions of my favorite creatures.

i mean, one little lovebird sitting on a table might look so sweet.

not only do these critters come in lots of colors and look amazing when multiples of all white are grouped together, they also look way more awesome than my own papier mache projects from elementary school.

on top of their aesthetic appeal, i learned that their paper and glass are made from recycled materials, and that some of their proceeds go to different organizations working to help others! how cool... doing good with design!
