Generally speaking...

I love a general store.

so this store/deli is right up the street from my little apartment and i LOVE it. I just sort of saunter by and peek in the windows whenever I get a chance... they sell fab sandwiches and fancy bottled drinks, funky furniture, seeds and feed, knickknacks, and cupcakes (which are apparently not as delish as advertised according to the folks at the chocolate and peanut butter gallery).

anyway, i just can't get over how cool and laid back it is in there, but how perfectly selected all the decor and other objects for sale are... somehow it's natural and vintage without feeling overdone or put-on. i guess it could all be leftover from the original owners when it was a neighborhood drugstore.

i think the best part is that it reminds me of my favorite store in the MS delta where I did teach for america.... Miss Del's General store. the motto was "feed, seed, and stuff you need," so obviously it smelled like fertilizer and wet dirt (two scents I really like) and sold hilarious cards, beautiful jewelry, books by southern authors and antiques. anyway, it's nice to have a reminder of a place i loved so much just down the street in ATL.

if you visit the VA highlands neighborhood of ATL, or Clarksdale, MS check these places out.

great photos of Belly from the chocolate peanut butter gallery.

dangerous atlanta?

wow! Mcsweeney's does Atlanta.... how could I not get excited about Mcsweeney's (the wonderful, hilarious, graphically astute publishing co. of author Dave Eggers) Internet Tendency posting about my town? that's right, y'all... obviously i am excited. anyway, have a little read...it's pretty darn funny.

and while you're at it, peruse their innovative packaging for their quarterly literary journal and hilariously quirky t-shirts....it's all pretty fab

Save the date...

come support Atlanta's cool crafters and the indie craft experience's Kraftwork at Young Blood Gallery and Boutique on 11/15/08. I know I''l be there.

yes, please...

I ran across these incredible necklaces slash collars yesterday on etsy. I mean, what a fab way to jazz up a white tank top or men's undershirt (and if you're anything like me...then this is your uniform and could stand a little jazzing-up) anyway, love. it.

thanks blue eyed freckle, for such cool stuff!

Scavenger hunts....what?!?

Whooo hooo! guess what I get to do for fun!!!
The Design for Mankind and Atlanta's cool-as-elvis costello Art House Co-op's Scavenger Hunt challenge...apparently if I complete all 24 categories one of my designs gets to go in their book.

Why this is cool to me:

1. I love Design for Mankind
2. I love graphic design and layout kind of stuff
3. Apparently I just don't have enough to do between grad school and planning a May wedding.... oh. er...um...
4. I love some procrastination.

well, anyway, it's going to be fun and I'll keep you posted on my progress!

greetings from atlanta...

i'm taking a reading break and wanted to share these wonderful postcards by katie kaiser, an atlanta graphic designer.

i wandered around one of my fav stores (urban cottage) in the VA highlands neighborhood the other sunday and in the back room were these fun and funky letterpress postcards from all of the coolest neighborhoods in ATL. each of them totally reflect the feel and personality of each hood.. which i always think is awesome.

anyway, i didn't have my camera, otherwise i would have taken my own photos of all the different cards, but the katie was kind enough to send some of her own pics my way.

next time you visit (or if you live in one of these neighborhoods) pick one up and send it to your nearest and dearest!

school is in session...

well friends, i got engaged last weekend and have been blissfully happy about it nearly every moment I think of my sweetie! it turns out that while i'm supremely ready to be his wifey, i am not supremely ready (or cut out) to plan a wedding. ick.

but then i saw this wonderful poster from the reForm school store via a desert bride and felt all tingly and excited all over again... its the 100% absolute truth about us.

then i saw these little girls and thought of his two precocious nieces and how much fun they'd have with this doll house.

it's made out of recycled cardboard...since the nieces look just like these tots (but smile way more) i may just get them this for a birthday or christmas...

speaking of cardboard children's toys...according to my parents MY favorite christmas present ever was a giant cardboard refrigerator box and markers to color on it. i made it into a fort and didn't come out for three days...
this story may be strange to you, but i think it illustrates perfectly why i may not be cut out to plan a wedding with all the bells and whistles.

either way, stay tuned for more cool, simple, socially-responsible design (and MORE from the Atlanta area soon!)

i wish i was an anthropologie-ist...

it turns out that i'm not the world's best photographer... but once i get a little more used to my camera, the quality of my pics will skyrocket. (please excuse the glares and reflections) anyway, check out the Lenox mall in Atlanta's anthropologie window right now!
don't books just scream "autumn" to you?

i love they way they're stacked hap-hazardly (but so architechturally). what do you think? books as their own bookshelves?

they also had this really cool chandelier that may have been shown all over the blog-world before, but i just really wanted to share it just in case. I'm sorry you can't see it very well, but it's a bunch of silverware suspended with yellow string from a frame....who thinks of these incredible things???

whoo hoo!!

We're getting married!
