geek chic
apparently i'm really into geek chic right now... maybe it's because my contacts have been killing me so i end up wearing my glasses every day. also, i'm CRAVING cooler weather and an excuse to wear my cardigans. here are a couple of images to whet your own appetites for nerdy style...

letting go...
no internshp today... which means i get to be at home doing thesis stuff and playing on the interweb (and should probably do a little exercise, too). while i was reviewing my backlog of reader posts i took a gander of some photos of perfectly planned parties...
this got me thinking about my own propensity to over-orchestrate things that should be fun. now, obviously this comes from my desire to be completely thoughtful of my guests needs PLUS the fact that there's been an inordinately high bar my hostess-par-excellence mom.

thing is, we went to this fab surprise birthday party on friday night for 'lu that was so fun and celebratory but not totally flawless.
in fact, the host was so late getting home that we all pitched in cleaning and arranging to get everything ready for the birthday girl. i loved feeling like i was making a contribution and adding my love to the party.... and it made me want to be less finicky about my own get-togethers. hmm.

i'm not saying that overnight I'll be able to get rid of my perfectionist tendencies and replace them with the easy spirit of barn raisings and potluck dinners... but it's a personal goal, ok?
take away: if you come over for dinner and i give you a job, don't be offended. it's just my new way of welcoming you.

Red Cross

after living through katrina in mississippi i can't believe that I never signed up to be trained as a red cross volunteer...i can't really think of many organizations that can respond to disasters on such a large and fairly effective scale an dmobilize such large groups of people to serve and care for others. all this rain is devastating homes and with schools closed i have a free day to help... i'm filling out an application to be a volunteer right now although i won't be trained in time to help tomorrow. if you're interested, you can do it here:

have your cake and eat it too...
y'all, will you indulge me just a few more wedding photo posts? I know it's narcissistic and frivolous, but it's so FUN for me to have photos of all our stuff in one place. ;) anyway, don't worry.. there's can't possibly be too many more after this one... and now, for the cake!
i think that the groom's cake was one of my fav details about our reception...

so, boone wanted little apple pies instead of a traditional cake, and my parents (who are brilliant and generous) and this sweet lady, Tex (who's like a great aunt) made this incredibly huge apple pie from scratch plus a zillion teeny bite-size apple pies. they were fantastic...

and here's the wedding cake... i didn't want one at all, but i couldn't get off the hook about it. we had to go with a professional for this one which was disappointing, but in the end it was delish and v. pretty.

our flowers...
i realized that i never posted pictures of our flowers... they were gorgeous, y'all. we don't have a ton of direct photos of the arrangements and bouquets, but i'll share what i've got. basically i asked for everything to be loose in feel and classic in style... to be as locally-grown as possible. it was all perfect.
here's a two-for-one photo... the baby's breath wreath on the door where we stood to say our vows and the men's boutonnieres. one single gardenia and a leaf.

here's my bouquet... gardenias from my neighbor's garden, peonies, verbena, rosemary, and oak leaf hydrangeas. i think everything but the peonies were locally grown.

and my maid's bouquets (they were the same as mine, but a little smaller) and here you can see the rosemary garland that our flower girls carried... it was so sweet!

randy, our florist designed this incredible floral chandelier to hang above the dance floor... can you tell from the photos how INCREDIBLE it looked?

we had lovely arrangements on the banisters of the staircase.. the day before we went on a hunt around town for local smylax and elaeagnus, plus we had hydrangeas and baby's breath... We had similar arrangements on the dining room table and around.

and here are a few other images of arrangements... same flowers as before but we used small mirrored glass votives to hold the smaller ones on the tables and all the tables were covered in burlap and battenburg lace tablecloths. :)

i've got some good news and some bad news...

the good news is that outstanding in the field is in Atlanta tomorrow!
the bad news is that we didn't have $400 to buy two tickets (and it's sold out).

the good news is that i have the cookbook...
the bad news is that my patio doesn't exactly look like this (and by exactly i mean not at all)

the good news is that it's FRIDAY! happy weekend, y'all.

creativity and compassion...
i love TOMS shoes. love them...even though sometimes they look like bedroom slippers. in fact, i got boone a pair for christmas last year and i've wished we wore the same shoe size ever since. i was scoping out these hot TOMS boots today and ran across this idea on their website....a TOM's "Style your soul" party.

basically, everyone buys a pair and gets together to decorate them. i wish i'd thought of this for our engagement party or my batchlorette party. anyway, i love that everyone's present would be a pair of TOMS that they give to children in needy and their favor would be the pair they painted and could keep for themselves.

an argument with myself...
note to self: there is such a thing as being too cool.

self back to me: so? she gets to look like a movie star and you look like... uh, you.

ordinary to extraordinary...
i love every day objects that are made special with extraordinary materials...
when i was wedding planning, my friend mb gave me the most wonderful silver origami peace cranes from 10,000 villiages that we have hanging in our apt.
and today i saw this... and i might just need to find a way to get one of these bone china cranes all the way from austrailia to atlanta to go with mb's cranes.

or maybe just one of haveyoumetmissjones other fab bone china designs....

district nine and the drive in...
we went to see district 9 last night at the drive-in and had a picnic.

#1 seeing a movie at the drive-in is just plain awesome.

#2 our dinner was pretty delish too. i made turkey and roasted red pepper pinwheels, a great pasta salad, and boone made us cookies and an avacado, black bean, corn salsa doused in lime. mmmmm. the only thing missing was a red checkered tablecloth and wine in a juice-box.
#3 go see district nine. it's one of the best commentaries on apartheid, intolerance, and violence that i've ever seen. the thing is, i usually hate violent movies--hate them-- but this one doesn't glorify it. in fact, it shows violence for what it is- complicated, devastating, sometimes unavoidable.
honestly, i didn't know anything about district nine (save that it was some sort of sci-fi alien thing) but as we drove away still listening to the soundtrack on the radio, boone and i couldn't stop talking about it's implications. seriously... if you want to see a GREAT social commentary and pretty effing cool sci-fi movie, go see it.

weekend pleasures
things i love about weekends in the fall:
1. boone's enthusiasm (or, fanaticism?) about college football
2. cooler weather means that being outside is F.U.N.
3. the days seem more important, somehow, since the other ones are filled with school
4. the smell of it (well, this isn't just for weekends)
5. making warmer, heavier, starchier food
